Across the globe, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is marking its own progress. The Gaganyaan programme, India's first human spaceflight initiative, has moved from design to hardware testing.
ISRO recently completed the human rating of its LVM3 launch vehicle. This certification means the rocket is now considered safe enough to carry a crew. The agency is also testing crew escape systems and life support modules at its facilities in Bengaluru and Sriharikota.
Engineers at ISRO have studied Artemis mission data closely. The lessons from NASA's work on heat shields, parachutes, and emergency abort systems are directly relevant to India's plans.
Officials from both space agencies have held technical exchanges in recent months. Areas of discussion include docking systems, astronaut training protocols, and deep space communication networks.
India is also a signatory to the Artemis Accords, the international framework for peaceful lunar exploration. This opens the door for Indian experiments and possibly Indian astronauts on future Artemis missions.
Both agencies face hard problems. The Artemis II capsule must protect its crew from deep space radiation for over a week. ISRO's Gaganyaan capsule, designed for lower orbits, will need upgrades if it is to go beyond Earth.
Thermal management is another hurdle. The spacecraft must handle temperature swings of over 200 degrees Celsius. Indian teams are developing multi-layer insulation and active cooling systems to tackle this.
The human factor is equally demanding. Astronauts need reliable food, water, and waste management for missions lasting days or weeks. ISRO has built a compact life support system that recycles air and water, a technology critical for longer flights.
Artemis II is expected to launch no earlier than late 2026, pending final safety reviews. ISRO plans its first uncrewed Gaganyaan test flight by mid-2026, with a crewed mission targeted for 2027.
The coming months will reveal how quickly India can close the gap with established spacefaring nations, and whether the two agencies can turn technical talks into joint missions beyond Earth's orbit.
