
A team of researchers at the University of Virginia (UVA) has uncovered a direct link between bile acid buildup and the progression of aggressive breast cancer. The discovery, reported in multiple outlets on Thursday, suggests that high levels of bile acids — digestive fluids produced by the liver — can actively drive cancer cells to spread.
The findings, first reported by News-Medical and highlighted by NDTV and Labroots, mark a significant step in understanding how gut health may influence breast cancer outcomes. The UVA team focused on how bile acids, which help digest fats in the small intestine, interact with breast tumour cells when they accumulate abnormally.
The study showed that elevated bile acid levels can trigger changes in breast cancer cells that make them more aggressive and more likely to metastasise, or spread to other parts of the body. According to the researchers, the bile acids appear to activate specific signalling pathways that promote cell migration and invasion.
“This is a completely unexpected connection,” said a lead researcher from UVA in a statement. “We knew bile acids were important for digestion, but we didn’t realise they could play such a direct role in cancer progression.” The team observed the effect in laboratory models, where cells exposed to higher bile acid concentrations showed a marked increase in aggressive behaviour.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence linking the gut microbiome and its byproducts to cancer risk. Bile acid levels are influenced by diet, gut bacteria, and liver function. When the balance tips, bile acids can accumulate, potentially creating an environment that favours tumour growth.
The UVA researchers noted that patients with certain gut conditions or those on high-fat diets may have elevated bile acid levels. The findings raise the possibility that managing bile acid levels through diet or medication could become a new strategy to slow aggressive breast cancers.
Experts not involved in the study cautioned that the research is still early. The results come from laboratory and animal models, and human trials will be needed to confirm whether the same mechanisms apply in patients. However, the team described the discovery as “a promising new avenue” for treatment.
For women with aggressive forms of breast cancer, the study offers a potential new target. Current treatments focus on hormones, HER2, or chemotherapy. If bile acids are confirmed as a driver, drugs that lower bile acid levels or block their effects could be tested as add-on therapies.
The researchers are now working to identify which specific bile acid receptors are involved, hoping to develop drugs that can interrupt the process without interfering with normal digestion. They are also planning to analyse bile acid levels in breast cancer patients to see if higher levels correlate with worse outcomes.
The UVA team plans to present the full data at an upcoming cancer research conference. Clinical studies are expected to follow within the next year. As the link between gut health and breast cancer becomes clearer, patients and doctors may soon have another factor to consider in the fight against the disease.
