Chennai Metro Rail’s biggest interchange station, located in the bustling Koyambedu area, is almost ready for operations. The station will link the existing Phase 1 corridor with the upcoming Phase 2 network.

Impact on Commuters

Once operational, the Koyambedu interchange will connect areas like Anna Nagar, Guindy, and the airport more efficiently. Residents in the western suburbs are likely to benefit the most.

Local commuters have expressed relief. “I spend nearly two hours driving from Porur to T Nagar. This metro link will save me time and money,” said R. Suresh, a regular traveler.

The station is also expected to reduce congestion on roads near Koyambedu. Metro officials believe it will encourage more people to switch to public transport.

Part of a Bigger Plan

The Koyambedu station is a key part of Chennai Metro’s Phase 2 expansion, which aims to add over 100 km of new lines. Phase 1 currently covers about 45 km and serves around 2.5 lakh passengers daily.

Phase 2 will eventually connect major hubs like Madhavaram, Sholinganallur, and the IT corridor. The Koyambedu interchange is designed to handle the expected surge in ridership over the next decade.

Officials have not yet disclosed the final cost of the station. However, the overall Phase 2 project is estimated to cost over Rs 60,000 crore.

Chennai Metro will announce a formal opening date after safety clearances and final inspections. Commuters can expect the station to begin operations within the next month.
