
The story of GLP-1 drugs โ now household names like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro โ is a tale of serendipity, decades of painstaking science, and a chance encounter with lizard venom. What began as a hunt for a better diabetes treatment has morphed into a global weight-loss revolution.
In the early 1990s, scientists at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx were studying a hormone called GLP-1. It was known to stimulate insulin release after meals. But GLP-1 degraded within minutes in the body โ useless as a drug.
Enter the Gila monster. Researchers discovered a compound in its venom, exendin-4, which mimicked GLP-1 but lasted far longer. That synthetic version became Byetta, the first GLP-1 drug approved for diabetes in 2005.
Dr. John Eng, a researcher at the VA, first isolated the compound. His work, backed by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, laid the foundation for an entire class of drugs.

Novo Nordisk launched semaglutide โ Ozempic for diabetes, Wegovy for weight loss โ in 2017 and 2021 respectively. These drugs offered once-weekly injections and even greater weight loss, averaging 15% of body weight in trials.
Demand soared. Celebrities, influencers, and everyday patients rushed to get prescriptions. Shortages followed. The drugs became cultural shorthand for easy weight loss, sparking debates about body image and access.
But the science continued to evolve. Researchers at CU Anschutz and elsewhere are now studying whether GLP-1 drugs can treat addiction, heart disease, and even Alzheimer's. Early results are promising.
The next frontier is oral GLP-1 drugs. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are developing pills that could replace injections. If successful, these would further widen access โ and deepen the impact of a discovery that started with a lizard's bite.
