GST staff told to wear helmets after ceiling collapse in Mumbai office

Mumbai: Staff at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) office in Mumbai have been told to wear helmets while at work after a portion of the ceiling collapsed inside the building last week. The unusual directive came from senior officers late Monday evening, following an internal safety review.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in a section of the GST Bhawan in south Mumbai. A chunk of the false ceiling fell near a cluster of workstations. No one was injured, but the crash left several employees shaken.

Helmets issued immediately

By Monday, the administration had procured dozens of hard hats and distributed them to staff working in the affected wing. “We have been asked to keep them on our heads while seated,” an employee told Mumbai Mirror on condition of anonymity. “It feels strange, but what is the alternative?”

Office memos seen by TIVRA News instruct all personnel in the vulnerable zone to wear the helmets until further notice. The order covers both regular employees and visiting taxpayers.

Structural audit ordered

The Public Works Department (PWD) has been roped in to conduct a full structural audit of the building. Senior GST officials said the crash was likely due to water seepage weakening the ceiling panels over time.

“The monsoon has been heavy this year. The old building has had issues with leakage before. We are not taking any chances now,” a senior officer said, requesting not to be named.

No casualties, but concerns remain

While no injuries were reported, the incident has raised concerns about workplace safety in government offices across the city. Many buildings in Mumbai are decades old and receive only patchwork maintenance.

Staff unions have demanded a long-term solution instead of temporary measures like helmets. “This is not a sustainable fix. We need the roof repaired, not headgear,” said a representative of the GST employees’ association.

Officials have assured that repairs will begin once the audit report is submitted. Until then, the helmets stay.

What happens next

The PWD audit is expected to be completed within two weeks. Based on its findings, the GST office may shift staff temporarily or carry out urgent repairs. For now, desks in the affected section are being used under hard hats.
