India launches first hydrogen train, flags off in Haryana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered train in Jind, Haryana, marking a significant step in the country's push for sustainable rail transport. The train, described as a zero-emission vehicle, runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology and releases only water vapour as a byproduct.

The launch comes amid global supply chain disruptions and rising oil prices. Speaking at the event, PM Modi said India's development did not come to a standstill despite the oil supply crisis, pointing to the hydrogen train as proof of the country's commitment to energy independence and green technology.

A Make in India milestone

The hydrogen train has been developed under the Make in India initiative, with components sourced from domestic manufacturers. Officials said the train is part of a pilot project to test hydrogen fuel cell technology on Indian Railways' network. If successful, the technology could be scaled up to replace diesel locomotives on non-electrified routes.

The train can travel at speeds of up to 140 km per hour and has a range of around 1,000 kilometres on a single refuelling. The hydrogen fuel is produced locally, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Green push for Indian Railways

Indian Railways, one of the world's largest rail networks, has set a target of becoming net-zero in carbon emissions by 2030. The hydrogen train is a key component of that plan. Currently, the network runs on a mix of electric and diesel locomotives. Electrification of tracks is ongoing, but many remote routes remain unelectrified, making hydrogen a viable alternative to diesel.

The government has also announced plans to deploy 35 hydrogen trains on heritage and hilly routes by 2027. These trains are expected to cut carbon emissions by over 11,000 tonnes annually.

Rs 14,700 crore in development projects

Alongside the train launch, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for and dedicated to the nation development projects worth Rs 14,700 crore in Jind. These include rail electrification, road widening, and water supply schemes. Officials said these projects would boost connectivity and economic growth in the region.

The hydrogen train launch and the development projects are part of a broader government push to showcase India's manufacturing and technological capabilities ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The success of the hydrogen train pilot will be closely watched. If it proves viable, India could become a global leader in hydrogen-powered rail transport, offering an alternative for countries looking to decarbonise their rail networks. For now, the train will run on a 100-km stretch in Haryana, with plans to expand routes based on performance and feedback.
