
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have set July 30 as the launch date for their first joint satellite. The announcement was made on Saturday by officials from both agencies.
The satellite, whose name has not been officially disclosed yet, represents a significant step in the growing partnership between India and the United States in space exploration. It is expected to carry instruments designed for earth observation and scientific data collection.
The joint payload will focus on monitoring environmental changes, including land use patterns and atmospheric conditions. Data from the satellite is expected to benefit agriculture, disaster management, and climate studies in both countries.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath had earlier indicated that the collaboration would leverage India's cost-effective launch capabilities and NASA's advanced sensor technology. The project has been in development for over two years.
This mission builds on previous cooperation, including the Chandrayaan-1 lunar probe which carried a NASA instrument. However, this is the first time the two agencies have jointly built and launched a complete satellite.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson had visited ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru last year to finalise technical agreements. The launch will take place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, using an ISRO launch vehicle.
The satellite is expected to operate from a low-earth orbit, providing high-resolution imagery. Both agencies have agreed to share the data openly with the global scientific community.
Industry observers note that the mission could open doors for more joint projects, including potential collaboration on human spaceflight. India's Gaganyaan programme and NASA's Artemis lunar missions are areas of mutual interest.
