NISAR โ short for NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar โ is a joint project between the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Indian Space Research Organisation. The mission's cost has now exceeded $1.5 billion, according to officials familiar with the program.
NISAR will use two radar systems โ an L-band radar from NASA and an S-band radar from ISRO โ to observe changes in Earth's ecosystems, ice sheets, and natural hazards. It will image the planet's land and ice-covered surfaces every 12 days, providing critical data for climate research.
The satellite's data will help scientists track deforestation, glacier melt, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. It will also monitor changes in agricultural lands and urban areas, offering insights into food security and disaster management.
At over $1.5 billion, NISAR is the most expensive Earth-imaging satellite project ever undertaken. The cost includes development, launch, and operations. NASA has contributed roughly $1 billion, while ISRO has invested about $500 million.
The satellite is currently under final integration at ISRO's facilities in Bengaluru. It is expected to launch in 2024 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, using ISRO's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark II.
The NISAR mission is a flagship example of growing collaboration between the US and India in space. It builds on earlier joint projects, including the Chandrayaan-1 lunar mission, which confirmed the presence of water molecules on the Moon in 2009.
NASA and ISRO have also signed agreements for future missions, including a joint effort to send Indian astronauts to the International Space Station in 2024. The partnership has expanded beyond science to include commercial space ventures and satellite navigation projects.
