Indian equity benchmarks opened sharply higher on Friday, July 17, 2026, as optimism over the upcoming first-quarter earnings season overpowered lingering geopolitical concerns. The BSE Sensex surged 480 points in early trade, while the NSE Nifty climbed 130 points, reflecting broad-based buying across sectors.
The positive start was largely attributed to strong expectations for corporate earnings in the April-June quarter. Market participants are betting on robust performance from banking, IT, and auto companies, with several blue-chip firms scheduled to announce results next week.
Analysts pointed to improving domestic demand, stable input costs, and a favourable monsoon as key factors supporting earnings growth. The rally was led by heavyweight stocks in banking and financial services, with HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and State Bank of India posting early gains.
Investors appeared to shrug off persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The markets are pricing in a scenario where these conflicts remain contained and do not escalate into broader disruptions, traders said.
Crude oil prices, which had edged up earlier this week on supply concerns, stabilised around $82 per barrel in Asian trade. A stable oil price is a key positive for India, a major importer, as it reduces inflationary pressure and supports corporate margins.
While the broader indices gained, sectoral trends showed some divergence. The Nifty IT index rose nearly 1 per cent, driven by deal wins and a weak rupee. The Nifty Auto index also traded higher, led by Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.
Meanwhile, the Nifty Pharma index was flat to slightly negative, as investors booked profits after a recent run-up. The Nifty Metal index edged lower on concerns over slowing demand from China.
The midcap and smallcap indices outperformed the benchmarks, gaining over 0.7 per cent each, indicating strong retail participation.
From a technical perspective, the Nifty has broken above its immediate resistance level of 24,800, with the next hurdle seen at 25,000. Support is placed at 24,500, traders noted. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is in the neutral zone, leaving room for further upside.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net buyers in the previous session, adding to domestic institutional buying. This dual support has provided a cushion against global headwinds.
In the currency market, the rupee opened marginally stronger at 83.45 against the US dollar, tracking the equity rally and mild dollar weakness overseas.
All eyes now turn to the earnings announcements due next week, particularly from Reliance Industries and TCS, which will set the tone for the broader market. Any negative surprise could trigger a pullback, analysts caution.
