
The Union education ministry has announced a new programme that will send students who excel in national science exhibitions to premier space agencies, including NASA and ISRO. Winners will get a chance to visit research centres and interact with scientists. The move is part of a broader push to encourage STEM education and nurture future talent.
Officials said the scheme will cover students from classes 6 to 12 who perform exceptionally well in state and national-level science fairs. The selected candidates will be sponsored for trips to NASA facilities in the United States and ISRO centres across India. The government believes hands-on exposure will spark deeper interest in space science.
The programme will be rolled out from the next academic session. A committee of education and space experts will evaluate projects based on originality, scientific rigour and practical application. The top 50 students from national exhibitions will qualify for overseas visits, while another 100 will tour ISRO’s campuses.
Teachers and mentors accompanying the students will also receive training sessions at these facilities. The ministry has allocated a separate budget for travel, accommodation and insurance. Schools have been asked to encourage participation in science fairs to ensure a wide talent pool.
School principals and science teachers have welcomed the announcement. Many say such incentives can transform classroom learning. "This will give students a real-world goal beyond textbooks," said a Delhi-based physics teacher. Students, too, are excited. Several winners from previous exhibitions had expressed a desire to work at space agencies.
The programme is also expected to boost India’s performance in international science Olympiads. By linking recognition to tangible rewards, the government hopes to sustain interest in research and innovation at an early age.
India has been investing heavily in space science and technology. ISRO’s recent missions have drawn global attention, and the government wants to channel that excitement into the education system. Similar initiatives in the past, such as the Young Scientist Programme, have seen good response.
The new scheme aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises experiential learning and critical thinking. Exposure to cutting-edge labs and scientists is expected to help students connect theory with practice. Officials say the trips will include workshops, demonstrations and Q&A sessions with engineers.
The ministry will issue detailed guidelines in the coming weeks, including application deadlines and evaluation criteria. Schools can start preparing students for the upcoming exhibition cycle. The first batch of winners is expected to visit NASA and ISRO facilities by early next year.
