Swiggy Instamart is adding cooking gas cylinders to its delivery list in Bengaluru. The quick-commerce arm of Swiggy has partnered with Indane to offer LPG refills at the doorstep. The service is now live in select areas of the city.
Customers can order a gas cylinder through the Swiggy app just like they would order groceries or snacks. The delivery is promised within minutes, leveraging Instamart's existing dark store network. Users need to have an existing Indane connection and provide their consumer number to place an order.
The price of the cylinder will be the same as the government-set subsidised rate. There is an additional delivery fee, which Swiggy says is competitive compared to other options. The company is initially targeting high-density residential neighbourhoods.
The move is a first for quick commerce platforms in India. Gas cylinder delivery has traditionally been handled by state-owned oil companies through local distributors. Booking often requires phone calls or visits to the distributor, and delivery can take days.
Swiggy Instamart sees this as a way to solve a persistent urban problem. Bengaluru residents often complain about delayed LPG refills and the inconvenience of coordinating with delivery personnel. By integrating the service into its app, Swiggy aims to make the process seamless.
Indane, the LPG brand of Indian Oil Corporation, is the primary supplier for the service. The partnership allows Swiggy to access Indane's inventory and distribution network. In return, Indane gets a modern retail channel for its product.
The companies have not disclosed the financial terms of the deal. Officials from both sides said they are piloting the model in Bengaluru before considering a wider rollout. Other cities may be added based on demand and operational viability.
Other quick commerce players like Zepto and Blinkit have not yet announced similar services. Swiggy's early entry could give it an edge in the home essentials category. Gas cylinders are a high-frequency purchase for most households, especially in a city like Bengaluru with a large working population.
The move also aligns with Swiggy's broader strategy to expand beyond food delivery. Instamart already delivers groceries, electronics, and pet supplies. Adding gas cylinders strengthens its position as a one-stop shop for daily needs.
Delivering gas cylinders comes with safety and regulatory hurdles. Swiggy has partnered with Indane to ensure compliance with petroleum rules. The cylinders will be transported in specially designed vehicles that meet safety standards.
Delivery partners will receive training on handling LPG cylinders. The company has also set up protocols for returns and exchanges in case of damaged or faulty cylinders. These steps are critical to avoid accidents and maintain trust.
Swiggy Instamart will compete with traditional distributors who have long-standing customer relationships. Price and convenience will be key differentiators. The success of the service will depend on whether it can match or beat the reliability of existing systems.
The rollout is expected to expand to more areas in Bengaluru over the next few weeks. Swiggy has not yet announced a timeline for other cities. Industry watchers will be closely watching customer adoption and operational efficiency in this new category.
