The discovery comes at a time when the World Health Organization has repeatedly warned that antimicrobial resistance is one of the top global public health threats. The new antibiotic is designed to target bacteria that have become resistant to existing treatments, a problem that claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year.
The research team, led by faculty from the university's College of Pharmacy and Chemistry, isolated the compound from a soil microorganism. The process involved screening hundreds of microbial samples collected from various locations in Western Visayas.
Laboratory tests showed the compound was effective against several strains of drug-resistant bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and certain Gram-negative pathogens. The patent covers the compound itself as well as methods for its production and use.
