
The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the deployment of a satellite equipped with a giant mirror capable of reflecting sunlight onto Earth at night. The decision, announced this week, has drawn sharp criticism from the global astronomical community.
The satellite is developed by Reflect Orbital, a company that plans to use the reflective technology to illuminate targeted areas on the ground after sunset. The concept, which has been in development for years, is intended to provide artificial light for commercial, industrial, or emergency applications.
The satellite carries a large, deployable mirror that can tilt to direct sunlight toward a specific location on Earth. Once operational, it could brighten a patch of the planet’s surface for several minutes at a time, effectively turning night into day in that zone.
Reflect Orbital has pitched the technology as a way to boost productivity, aid disaster response, or reduce reliance on ground-based lighting. The company has not disclosed a precise launch timeline or the satellite’s exact orbital parameters.
Astronomers and light-pollution researchers have reacted with alarm. They argue that any additional artificial light in the night sky will interfere with ground-based telescopes and exacerbate the already severe problem of light pollution.
“This is a dangerous precedent,” said one researcher familiar with the project. “Even a single bright source in orbit can ruin long-exposure images and disrupt observations of faint celestial objects.”
The International Dark-Sky Association has previously warned that space-based reflectors could brighten the night sky globally, not just at targeted sites. The approval has reignited debates about the regulation of commercial satellites that affect the shared resource of the night sky.
The FCC’s approval is limited to the first satellite in the planned constellation. The agency has not yet ruled on applications for additional units. Critics have called for a broader environmental review before any further launches are authorised.
