Why Congress is sticking with Amrinder Raja Warring as Punjab chief

The Congress party is showing no signs of backing down from its decision to retain Amrinder Raja Warring as the Punjab unit chief. Despite internal rumblings and a public show of strength by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, the high command appears determined to stick with Warring. The old playbook that propelled Channi to the chief minister's chair in 2021 is being dusted off — but this time, the script is being rewritten against him.

Channi's camp falls in line

Channi and his close associate, senior leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, met Congress general secretary K C Venugopal in Delhi on Tuesday. Sources said both leaders conveyed that they would abide by the high command's decision and recognise Rahul Gandhi as their leader. The meeting came days after Channi publicly questioned Warring's leadership and demanded a change at the top.

The meeting signals a tactical retreat. Channi's camp has realised that an open confrontation with the Gandhis could backfire. Party insiders say the high command has made it clear that it will not blink this time, even if it means losing some senior leaders.

Rahul's reluctance to meet Channi

Rahul Gandhi has reportedly been reluctant to meet Channi in person, despite the former CM's requests for a one-on-one discussion. This distance is being read as a deliberate message. The Congress leadership is wary of triggering a cycle of demands from other factions if Channi is seen as being appeased.

In 2021, Rahul had backed Channi for the chief minister's post after Amarinder Singh resigned. That decision was widely seen as an attempt to balance caste equations and counter the Aam Aadmi Party's appeal among Dalit voters. But the move also created a power centre that the high command now finds hard to manage.

Why Warring is being backed

Warring, a two-time MP from Ludhiana, was appointed Punjab Congress chief in 2022. Despite the party's crushing defeat in the 2022 assembly elections, the high command sees him as a loyal organisational man who can rebuild the party from the ground up. He is also seen as someone who does not nurse chief ministerial ambitions — a rare quality in Punjab Congress.

The party is also wary of repeating the mistakes of the past. Frequent changes in state leadership have hurt the Congress in Punjab. The high command believes that sticking with Warring will send a signal of stability to workers and voters ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.

What comes next

Channi has publicly accepted the party's decision, saying he will work under Warring's leadership. But the truce is fragile. The Congress high command will need to manage factional egos carefully, especially with the AAP government in power and the Shiromani Akali Dal trying to rebuild.

For now, the party is betting on Warring to hold the fort. Whether this gamble pays off will depend on how long the Channi camp stays quiet — and how effectively Warring can unite a deeply fractured unit.
