Bengaluru Yellow Line train fleet nears full strength

Bengaluru's Yellow Line metro fleet is almost at full strength. A senior official from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) confirmed that 90% of the rakes are now operational, marking a significant milestone for the line that connects RV Road to Bommasandra.

The development comes as a relief for thousands of daily commuters who have been waiting for the line to achieve its full potential. The Yellow Line, which is part of Phase 2 of the Namma Metro network, has seen staggered induction of trains since its partial opening.

12 rakes now in service

Currently, 12 rakes are plying on the Yellow Line. These are a mix of standard gauge trains, each capable of carrying over 1,000 passengers during peak hours. The remaining rakes — a total of 16 are planned for the line — are expected to be inducted in the coming weeks.

“We are nearly there. The fleet induction has been steady, and we expect full strength by next month,” the official said. BMRCL has been working to address minor technical issues and clearance procedures that delayed the induction of a few rakes.

Signal and track upgrades completed

The Yellow Line runs on a 19-km corridor with 16 stations. To handle the increased frequency of trains, BMRCL has completed signal and track upgrades at key junctions, including the interchange at Silk Board. These upgrades were necessary to ensure safe headway between trains.

“With more rakes, we can reduce the waiting time for passengers. The goal is to run trains every 4-5 minutes during peak hours,” the official added. Currently, the frequency stands at around 7-8 minutes, which has often led to crowded platforms.

Commuters express cautious optimism

Regular travellers on the Yellow Line have welcomed the news, though some remain cautious. “The line has been a lifesaver for those going to Electronic City. But we need more trains to avoid the rush,” said Ramesh K, a software engineer who commutes daily from Jayadeva Hospital to Hosa Road.

Others pointed out that the line still faces challenges with last-mile connectivity. Many stations lack adequate feeder bus services or parking facilities, forcing commuters to rely on autos or share cabs.

BMRCL has said it is in talks with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to increase bus frequency at key Yellow Line stations. However, no concrete timeline has been announced.

What happens next

The full deployment of the Yellow Line fleet is expected by August-end. Once all 16 rakes are operational, BMRCL plans to increase services on the entire line, including a possible extension of operating hours. For now, commuters will have to wait a little longer for a seamless ride.
