
Chinese scientists have achieved what they describe as a historic breakthrough in treating type 2 diabetes. For the first time, a patient has been completely reversed of the condition using stem cell therapy, no longer requiring insulin or other diabetes medications.
The development, reported by state-affiliated media and confirmed by researchers involved, marks a significant milestone in the fight against one of India's and the world's most common metabolic disorders.
The treatment involved taking the patient's own cells and reprogramming them into stem cells. These were then guided to become insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, which were transplanted back into the patient.
Once inside the body, these cells began naturally regulating blood sugar levels. The patient, a 59-year-old man who had lived with type 2 diabetes for over two decades, stopped needing insulin injections within weeks of the procedure.
Doctors at a leading hospital in Shanghai, where the trial was conducted, confirmed that his blood glucose levels have remained stable for more than a year without any medication.
While stem cell treatments have been explored for type 1 diabetes, this is the first documented case of reversing type 2 diabetes in a human patient. Type 2 diabetes accounts for roughly 90 percent of all diabetes cases globally.
The patient had previously suffered from poor blood sugar control despite taking multiple oral drugs and insulin. His pancreas had gradually lost its ability to produce enough insulin, a common progression in long-standing type 2 diabetes.
Twelve months after the transplant, the patient's blood tests showed normal insulin and C-peptide levels, indicating that the new cells were functioning like a healthy pancreas.
Medical experts not involved in the trial have welcomed the result but warned that it is still early days. The procedure was performed on a single patient, and larger studies are needed to confirm safety and effectiveness across diverse populations.
"This is a proof of concept โ a very exciting one โ but it is not yet a cure that can be offered to millions," a senior endocrinologist based in Delhi commented, asking not to be named as he was not authorised to speak on the matter.
The team behind the breakthrough is now planning a larger clinical trial. They aim to enrol about 20 patients in the next phase to test the therapy's reproducibility and long-term durability.
Regulatory approvals for such trials in India are expected to be a separate and lengthy process, but researchers in the country are closely watching the Chinese results.
India is home to an estimated 10 crore people with diabetes, the vast majority of whom have type 2. Current treatments focus on lifestyle changes, oral medications, and insulin injections โ none of which reverse the underlying loss of insulin-producing cells.
A therapy that can regenerate a patient's own insulin supply would fundamentally change how the disease is managed. It could reduce dependence on daily medication and prevent long-term complications such as kidney failure, blindness, and amputations.
However, the cost and complexity of stem cell treatments remain major barriers. Each patient's cells must be individually reprogrammed and transplanted, a process that currently costs several lakh rupees in research settings.
Scientists believe that with further refinements and automation, the procedure could become more affordable in the coming decade.
The Chinese team has not disclosed a timeline for when the therapy might become available outside clinical trials. For now, the focus remains on confirming that the reversal seen in this first patient was not a one-off result.
Watch for the results of the next phase of trials, expected to be published within two years. If successful, stem cell therapy could move closer to becoming a realistic treatment option for the hundreds of millions living with type 2 diabetes.
