
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 shook the southern coast of Mexico on Friday, July 17, near the border with Guatemala. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the quake struck close to the coastal town of Puerto Madero in the state of Chiapas.
The tremor, which occurred at a depth of around 60 to 70 kilometres, was felt strongly across the region. Residents in nearby cities reported buildings swaying. Authorities immediately issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coasts of Mexico and several Central American nations.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) stated that hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre. Coastal communities in Chiapas and neighbouring Guatemala were urged to move to higher ground.
Mexican civil protection officials activated emergency protocols. Schools and public buildings in coastal towns were evacuated. The navy and local police began patrolling beaches to warn swimmers and boat owners.
As of early reports, there were no confirmed casualties or major structural damage. Communication lines in some rural areas remained down. Officials noted that damage assessment teams were being deployed.
Seismologists warned that aftershocks were likely in the coming hours. The region is seismically active, sitting along the boundary of the Cocos and North American tectonic plates.
Mexico has a well-established earthquake early warning system, which likely provided some advance notice to residents in the capital and other cities. The system, known as SASMEX, has been credited with saving lives in past quakes.
Neighbouring Guatemala also activated its disaster response agencies. The Central American country has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past, and authorities stressed the need for vigilance.
Power outages were reported in a few towns near the epicentre, but electricity was being restored gradually. No major infrastructure failures have been flagged so far.
Authorities continue to monitor for tsunami waves and aftershocks. The situation remains fluid as more data becomes available from the affected areas.
