
For years, the question has nagged at millions of people who hold a phone to their ear every day: does it cause brain cancer? A new, comprehensive study backed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) now offers a clear answer.
There is no evidence that mobile phones cause brain cancer. The review, published on Thursday, analysed decades of research and found no link between the radiation emitted by mobile phones and brain cancer risk.
The research was commissioned by the WHO and conducted by a team of international experts. They examined over 5,000 studies published between 1994 and 2022. The final analysis included 63 of the most rigorous studies, covering a wide range of populations and exposure levels.
The review focused on radiofrequency electromagnetic fields – the type of radiation mobile phones use. Unlike ionising radiation from X-rays, this is non-ionising and does not have enough energy to damage DNA directly.
Researchers looked at cancers such as glioma, meningioma, and pituitary tumours. They also examined leukaemia and other cancers in both adults and children.
Critics have often argued that studies might miss a link because they do not track long-term or heavy users. This review addressed that directly. It found no increased risk even among people who have used mobile phones for a decade or more, or those who use them extensively.
“The results are reassuring,” lead author Dr. Ken Karipidis, from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, told The Conversation. “The evidence does not show a causal relationship between mobile phone use and brain cancer.”
The review also found no link for other cancers of the head and neck, or for leukaemia. The findings were consistent across different countries, study designs, and time periods.
The worry about mobile phones and cancer has been around since the 1990s. In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a WHO body, classified radiofrequency fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”. That classification was based on limited evidence from observational studies. The new review suggests that evidence has not held up under more scrutiny.
Mobile technology has evolved rapidly since then. Modern phones emit lower power than older models. Yet the number of mobile phone users globally has crossed 7 billion. If there were a strong link, experts say, brain cancer rates should have risen noticeably. They have not.
In India, mobile phone subscribers number over 1.1 crore. The Department of Telecommunications has set strict radiation norms that match international standards. The new findings may ease concerns among Indian users who have long worried about tower radiation and handset safety.
The study does not say mobile phones are risk-free in every way. Distracted driving, eye strain, and sleep disruption are real concerns. But brain cancer, it appears, is not one of them.
The WHO is expected to update its own guidance on radiofrequency radiation based on this and other reviews. For now, the authors say people should not panic. If you are still worried, simple steps like using speakerphone or earphones can reduce exposure further.
What happens next? The same team is now reviewing evidence on other health effects, including headaches, cognitive function, and male fertility. Those results are expected in the coming months.
