
Fishermen in Hyderabad are turning to satellite maps to locate fish stocks more accurately, leading to bigger catches and lower operational costs. The technology, which provides real-time data on sea surface temperatures, chlorophyll levels, and ocean currents, helps identify areas where fish are likely to gather.
This shift marks a significant departure from traditional fishing methods, which often relied on experience and guesswork. Fishermen now access the maps through mobile apps or local fisheries offices, allowing them to plan trips more efficiently.
The satellite maps use data from remote sensing satellites to track ocean conditions. Chlorophyll concentrations, for instance, indicate the presence of phytoplankton, which attract smaller fish and, in turn, larger predatory species.
Sea surface temperature data helps identify thermal fronts where warm and cold waters meet, often creating ideal feeding zones. Fishermen receive these inputs as colour-coded maps, with red and orange zones indicating high fish potential.
Local fisheries officials have been conducting workshops to train fishermen on interpreting the maps. The response has been positive, with many reporting that they now spend less time searching for fish.
Early adopters of the technology say their catches have increased by up to 30 percent in some cases. This has directly translated into higher incomes for fishing families who often operate on thin margins.
Fuel costs have also dropped. Instead of trawling large areas blindly, fishermen now head straight to targeted zones. One fisherman from a coastal village near Hyderabad told reporters that his monthly fuel bill has come down by nearly a quarter.
The environmental benefits are equally notable. By reducing the time spent at sea, the method cuts down on carbon emissions. It also minimises bycatch, as fishermen can avoid areas where non-target species are abundant.
Not all fishermen have embraced the technology. Some older fishermen remain sceptical, preferring traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Others cite the cost of smartphones or data plans as a barrier.
Officials are addressing these concerns by providing free map printouts at harbours and setting up community viewing centres. The state fisheries department has also tied up with telecom providers to offer subsidised data packs for fishermen.
Training programmes are being expanded to cover more villages. The goal is to have at least one trained person in each fishing crew who can read the satellite data.
The success in Hyderabad has caught the attention of neighbouring states. Officials from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have visited to study the model. There are plans to scale the programme nationally, with support from the central government and international agencies.
As satellite technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, more fishermen are likely to adopt it. The next phase could involve integrating artificial intelligence to predict fish movements with even greater accuracy.
