
Brazil is facing a sharp rise in climate-related disasters, with a new analysis showing a 460% increase since the 1990s. The study, published by researchers at the Federal University of SΓ£o Paulo and the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research, tracks extreme events across the country over three decades.
The jump is stark. In the 1990s, Brazil recorded an average of 125 climate disasters per year. By the 2010s, that number had climbed to over 570 annually. The data covers floods, landslides, droughts, and storms β events that have killed thousands and displaced millions.
Hydrological events β primarily floods and droughts β make up 90% of the increase. Heavy rainfall has become more intense in the south and southeast, triggering landslides and flash floods. In the northeast, prolonged droughts have dried up reservoirs and destroyed crops.
The study points to a clear pattern: warmer air holds more moisture, leading to heavier downpours. At the same time, rising temperatures increase evaporation, worsening dry spells in already arid regions. The result is a seesaw of extremes, with little relief in between.
The Amazon rainforest, often called the 'lungs of the planet', is both a victim and a driver of this trend. Deforestation β much of it for cattle ranching and soy farming β has reduced the forest's ability to regulate rainfall. Fewer trees mean less moisture recycled into the atmosphere, leading to longer dry seasons and more intense fires.
Scientists estimate that the Amazon has lost nearly 20% of its original forest cover. This loss disrupts rainfall patterns not just locally, but as far away as the agricultural heartland of central Brazil. The study warns that continued deforestation could push parts of the Amazon past a tipping point, turning them into savanna.
Global warming is also heating the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil's coast. Warmer sea surface temperatures provide more energy for storms, leading to stronger cyclones and heavier rainfall. In 2023, a rare tropical cyclone hit southern Brazil, killing dozens and flooding entire towns.
The study's authors note that such events were once considered exceptional. Now, they are becoming more frequent. The data shows that the frequency of extreme storms has doubled since the 1990s.
Brazil's disaster management agency reports that over 30 million people have been affected by climate disasters in the last decade alone. Economic losses run into billions of reais, with damage to infrastructure, housing, and agriculture. The poorest communities often suffer the most, lacking resources to rebuild or relocate.
In 2022, heavy rains in the state of Bahia left over 100 dead and 500,000 displaced. In 2021, drought in the ParanΓ‘ River basin β one of South America's largest β cut hydroelectric power generation by a third, driving up energy prices across the country.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the government has a comprehensive plan to adapt to these changes. Current policies focus on early warning systems and emergency response, but critics say long-term prevention is lacking.
Experts say the trend is unlikely to reverse without aggressive cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and a halt to deforestation. Brazil's new climate targets, announced in late 2024, aim to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 β but implementation remains uncertain.
The next few years will test whether Brazil can balance economic growth with the urgent need to protect its ecosystems. With disasters piling up, the cost of inaction is only growing higher.
