
NASA astronaut Dr. Anil Menon, an Indian-origin physician and flight engineer on his first mission to the International Space Station (ISS), has outlined how ongoing research aboard the orbital lab could solve a critical problem for future deep-space travel and disaster relief on Earth.
Speaking from the ISS, Menon highlighted experiments focused on converting purified water from the station's systems into sterile intravenous (IV) fluid. This technology, he explained, could be a game-changer for long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars, where carrying large quantities of medical supplies is impractical.
The ISS currently recycles water from urine, sweat, and cabin humidity with remarkable efficiency. But Menon and his team are exploring a step further—using that same water to create medical-grade saline solution. "If we can reliably produce IV fluid from station water, we remove the need to launch heavy, bulky bags from Earth," Menon said during a media interaction.
For a Mars mission that could last three years, every kilogram matters. The ability to manufacture critical medical supplies on-site would not only save payload space but also ensure astronauts have access to life-saving treatment in case of dehydration, burns, or infection.
The implications extend far beyond space exploration. Menon pointed out that the same portable water-purification and sterilization technology could be deployed in remote or disaster-hit regions on Earth where clean IV fluid is scarce. "Imagine a field hospital after an earthquake or in a rural clinic that lacks a sterile supply chain," he said. "The same system that works in microgravity can work anywhere."
The technology is being developed in partnership with NASA's Human Research Program and commercial partners. It uses a combination of filtration, ultraviolet light, and precise salt dosing to ensure the final product meets pharmaceutical standards. Early tests on the ISS have shown promising results, though more work is needed before it can be used on crew members.
Menon's journey to space has been anything but ordinary. Born in India, he moved to the United States at a young age and trained as a doctor before joining NASA's astronaut corps. His medical background made him an ideal candidate for this kind of physiological research. "We're not just engineers up here," he said with a smile. "We're the lab rats and the lab technicians at the same time."
His first mission has drawn significant attention in India, where space agency ISRO is also exploring human spaceflight. Menon's work could offer valuable insights for India's Gaganyaan program, which aims to send astronauts to low-Earth orbit by the end of the decade.
The research is still in its early phases, but the potential is vast. If successful, the same system that keeps astronauts hydrated on the ISS could one day save lives on Earth and help humans take their next giant leap to the Red Planet. NASA has not yet announced a timeline for operational use of the technology.
