
The joint Nasa-Isro satellite, Nisar, has successfully sent its first images from space. The milestone was confirmed on Friday, marking a key step for the ambitious Earth observation mission.
Nisar, short for Nasa-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar, is designed to map the Earth's surface in unprecedented detail. The first images have been received by ground stations, though officials have not yet released the visuals publicly.
The project was announced in 2014 as a collaboration between the United States' space agency and India's space research organisation. Nisar carries two radar systems: an L-band radar from Nasa and an S-band radar from Isro.
This dual-frequency capability allows the satellite to see through clouds and observe the planet day and night. The mission is expected to cost around $1.5 billion, with both agencies sharing the burden.
Nisar's primary goal is to monitor changes in Earth's ecosystems, land ice, and natural hazards. It will track deforestation, glacial movements, and the aftermath of earthquakes and landslides.
Scientists hope the data will improve climate models and help disaster response teams act faster. The satellite can image the entire planet every 12 days, providing a near-real-time view of environmental shifts.
The mission's orbit is polar and sun-synchronous, meaning it passes over the same location at the same local time each cycle. This consistency is crucial for comparing images over months and years.
For Isro, Nisar is another feather in a cap that already includes successful lunar and Mars missions. The agency has increasingly partnered with international players to share costs and expertise.
The joint mission also strengthens ties between Washington and New Delhi in the space sector. Both governments have signalled interest in deeper cooperation on future projects, including human spaceflight.
Nisar was launched from India's Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota aboard a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. The launch was delayed multiple times due to technical issues and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nisar will now undergo a calibration phase lasting several weeks. Scientists will fine-tune the instruments before beginning routine science operations.
The first set of calibrated images and data is expected to be released to the public later this year. Researchers around the world are waiting to see what the satellite reveals about a changing planet.
