Bengaluru: A 35-year-old Nepali national working as a security guard died after being assaulted in the Panathur area of the city late Friday night. Bengaluru police have arrested five individuals in connection with the incident.
The victim, identified as Ramesh Tamang, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday at a nearby hospital. He had been working in the city for the past three years.
Attack on Friday night
According to the police, Tamang was attacked around 11:30 pm on Friday near his workplace. A group of men allegedly assaulted him with sharp weapons. Neighbours heard his cries and rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Officials said four of the accused were arrested early Saturday morning, and a fifth was picked up later in the day. Their names have not been released pending formal remand proceedings.
Police investigation underway
Senior police officers visited the crime scene on Saturday. They collected CCTV footage from nearby buildings and are examining call records of the suspects. A senior officer said the motive appeared to be a personal grudge, but they have not ruled out other angles.
The victim's family in Nepal has been informed. The Nepali consulate in Bengaluru is in touch with local authorities to facilitate the repatriation of the body.
Security concerns for migrant workers
Tamang's death has sparked concerns among the city's large community of migrant workers from Nepal and northeastern states. Many work as security guards or in hospitality. Community leaders have demanded a thorough investigation and better protection for migrant labourers.

The five accused will be produced before a magistrate on Sunday. Police are expected to seek their custody for further interrogation.
