Night patrols intensified across city

Bengaluru police have rolled out 'Operation Suraksha', a comprehensive drive aimed at making the city's streets safer after dark. The initiative, launched this month, involves deploying additional personnel and vehicles to patrol key areas during late hours.

Officers are conducting surprise checkpoints at major junctions and along routes frequently used by women and IT professionals returning from night shifts. The move follows repeated requests from residents and employee unions for better security.

Focus on vulnerable zones

Under the operation, police have identified several 'vulnerable zones' — stretches of road with poor lighting or low foot traffic. These areas now see regular patrolling by two-wheeler and four-wheeler units. Command centres are monitoring feeds from CCTV cameras in real time.

Senior officers told The New Indian Express that the aim is to create a visible deterrent. "We want people to feel safe at any hour," a senior official said. The force has also roped in private security guards in commercial districts to report suspicious activity.

Coordination with tech firms

Many tech parks and BPOs have set up dedicated helplines for their employees. Police are sharing live updates about roadblocks and incidents through these channels. Cab aggregators have been asked to share driver details with police on request.

Residents in areas like Whitefield, Electronic City, and Outer Ring Road have reported a drop in chain snatching and harassment cases since the operation began. However, police have not yet released official data on crime reduction.

Long-term plan and challenges

Commissioner of Police has said the operation will be sustained beyond the initial phase. Additional lighting and CCTV installation are being fast-tracked in partnership with the city's civic body. But funding remains a constraint, with the force relying on existing resources.

Some activists have pointed out that patrolling alone cannot solve the problem. They have called for better public transport frequency at night and more well-lit bus stops. Police say they are open to suggestions and will review the operation every month.

What to watch: The next phase of Operation Suraksha will likely focus on integrating more AI-based surveillance tools and expanding the network of neighbourhood watch groups. Officials expect a detailed assessment report by the end of the quarter.
