Golden Ball: Rodri takes top honour

Spain midfielder Rodri has been awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Manchester City star was the engine of Spain's title-winning campaign, controlling tempo and scoring crucial goals from deep positions.

Rodri beat out a strong field that included teammate Pedri and France's Kylian Mbappe. The award is the latest in a growing collection for the 30-year-old, who also won the Ballon d'Or in 2024.

Golden Boot: Mbappe makes history

France forward Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer with eight goals. He becomes only the second player in World Cup history to win the award in consecutive editions, after doing so in 2022 as well.

Mbappe's tally included a hat-trick against Argentina in the group stage and a brace in the semi-final against Brazil. He finished two goals ahead of Spain's Alvaro Morata, who ended with six.

Golden Glove: Martinez repeats

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez won the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper of the tournament. The Aston Villa shot-stopper kept four clean sheets and produced decisive saves in the knockout rounds.

Martinez becomes the first goalkeeper to win the award in back-to-back World Cups. His penalty save against Germany in the quarter-finals is widely regarded as the moment that swung the tournament Argentina's way.

Other award winners

Spain's Pedri won the Best Young Player award for players under 21. The 23-year-old midfielder's creative passing and work rate were central to Spain's possession-based style.

The Fair Play award went to Japan, who finished with the fewest yellow cards among teams that reached the round of 16. The FIFA All-Star Team of the Tournament will be announced in the coming days.

A clean sweep for Spain

Spain's victory in the final against France was their fourth World Cup title. Along with the Golden Ball and Best Young Player, Spanish players also claimed several positional awards.

Coach Luis de la Fuente was named Best Coach of the Tournament. His tactical adjustments in the knockout phase, particularly switching to a back-three against Brazil, were widely praised.

The award ceremony took place immediately after the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. FIFA president Gianni Infantino presented the Golden Ball to Rodri amid chants from Spanish fans.

Officials have not yet confirmed the exact prize money breakdown for individual award winners. Previous editions saw Golden Ball winners receive $1 lakh and a trophy designed by Italian jewellers.

The 2026 World Cup was the first to feature 48 teams and 104 matches. Organisers reported record global viewership figures, with the final drawing an estimated 1.5 billion viewers worldwide.

Attention now turns to the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. The tournament will mark the centenary of the first World Cup held in Uruguay.
