Sonam Wangchuk to End Fast if Parliament Debates Education Accountability

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will end his indefinite fast if the upcoming Parliament session focuses on education accountability, his associate Gitanjali Angmo said on Monday. She made the announcement at the Jantar Mantar protest site in New Delhi, where supporters have gathered in solidarity with Wangchuk's demands.

Wangchuk has been on hunger strike since last week, pressing for reforms in India's education system. His fast has drawn attention to what he describes as a lack of accountability in the sector, particularly regarding the implementation of the National Education Policy.

Hospital Discharge Plea

Separately, Wangchuk has sought temporary discharge from Safdarjung Hospital, where he is currently admitted. He wants to participate in a march to Parliament alongside other activists. The hospital administration has not yet responded to the request.

Wangchuk's health has been a subject of concern. Former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan has backed the activist, saying his life must be saved. "The government must ensure that his health is not compromised," Balakrishnan said, adding that the protest should not come at the cost of a human life.

Legal Battle Over Hospital Transfer

Gitanjali Angmo, a legal advisor and close associate of Wangchuk, has filed an appeal against the Delhi High Court's refusal to shift him to Medanta hospital. The appeal argues that Wangchuk requires specialised care not available at Safdarjung. The court is yet to set a date for hearing the petition.

Angmo has been coordinating Wangchuk's legal and medical needs since his fast began. She told reporters that the activist's condition remains stable but stressed the need for better medical facilities. "We are not taking any chances with his health," she said.

Broader Demands

The protest at Jantar Mantar has also seen participation from student groups and civil society organisations. They are demanding a parliamentary debate on education accountability, including the proper utilisation of funds allocated for schools and colleges in rural areas.

Wangchuk, known for his work in Ladakh's education sector, has been a vocal critic of what he calls the "commercialisation of education". His fast has reignited discussions on the quality of education in government institutions and the need for greater transparency.

Officials have not confirmed whether the government will accommodate Wangchuk's demand for a dedicated Parliament session. The monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to begin next week, and the agenda is yet to be finalised.
