
Industrial automation suppliers are rolling out a new wave of decentralised frequency inverters that pack more safety features directly into the drive unit. The latest models integrate functions such as Safe Torque Off (STO) and Safe Stop 1 (SS1), eliminating the need for separate safety relays or external monitoring modules.
These built-in safety functions allow machines to stop safely without removing power from the drive electronics. For plant operators, this means faster commissioning and simpler compliance with machinery safety standards like ISO 13849 and IEC 61800-5-2.
Decentralised inverters are mounted close to the motor or directly on the machine frame, rather than inside a central control cabinet. The new designs maintain IP65 protection ratings, so they can withstand dust, moisture, and vibration on the factory floor.
Short power and signal cables between the drive and motor reduce electromagnetic interference and voltage drops. Engineers report that installation time drops by as much as 30 percent compared to traditional cabinet-based setups.
Manufacturers are equipping these drives with multi-protocol Ethernet interfaces โ Profinet, EtherNet/IP, and EtherCAT โ for seamless integration into existing automation networks. Parameter setting and diagnostics can be handled remotely via a web interface or smartphone app.
Some models include integrated braking choppers and dynamic braking resistors, allowing precise speed and torque control even during rapid deceleration. Power ratings range from 0.25 kW to 7.5 kW, covering most small to medium conveyor, pump, and fan applications.
The latest generation adds predictive maintenance alerts. The drive monitors internal temperature, DC bus voltage, and runtime hours, then sends warnings before components degrade. This helps plants shift from reactive repairs to planned servicing.
Firmware updates can be deployed over the network without opening the enclosure. For facilities with multiple identical machines, cloning drive parameters to new units takes minutes instead of hours.
Automotive assembly lines, logistics warehouses, and food processing plants are early adopters. The combination of decentralised mounting and integrated safety reduces the number of components in the control cabinet, freeing up floor space and simplifying electrical schematics.
System integrators highlight that the new drives lower the total cost of ownership by cutting wiring, reducing fault-finding time, and minimising spare part inventory. End users also benefit from standardised safety logic across different machine types.
Safety certification bodies have already approved several models for use in SIL 3 / PL e systems. This means the drives can be used in safety-critical applications without additional external safety controllers.
Industrial Engineering News Europe reports that more than a dozen manufacturers have announced compatible product lines this quarter. The trend points toward further miniaturisation and deeper integration of motion control and safety functions into a single compact housing.
Industry analysts expect the market for decentralised drives with embedded safety to grow steadily over the next five years as factories continue to adopt flexible, modular automation architectures.
