IPS Trainee Accused of Groping, Sexual Harassment; Case Filed at NPA

A trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (NPA) in Hyderabad has been booked for allegedly groping and sexually harassing a woman batchmate. The incident has sent shockwaves through the premier training institute.
The case was registered after the woman officer filed a complaint detailing multiple instances of harassment. She accused the male trainee of stalking, making unwelcome advances, and physically assaulting her.
The Allegations
According to the complaint, the accused officer groped the woman and subjected her to persistent sexual harassment. One particularly disturbing allegation involves the accused throwing condoms at her, a claim that has been corroborated by sources familiar with the investigation.
The woman officer stated that the harassment had been ongoing for some time, creating a hostile environment within the academy. Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with sexual harassment and assault.
Suicide Attempt
Hours after the complaint was filed, the accused trainee was found unconscious in his room on the academy premises. Officials suspect he consumed an overdose of sleeping pills in what appears to be a suicide attempt.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Medical staff confirmed he is now out of danger and is under observation. Academy authorities have launched an internal inquiry into the matter.
Academy Response
The NPA administration has stated that it takes the allegations seriously. A senior official said the accused has been suspended from training pending the outcome of the investigation.
"We have zero tolerance for such behaviour. The trainee has been placed under suspension and a detailed inquiry is underway," an academy spokesperson told reporters. The woman officer has been provided counselling and support, officials added.
The Hyderabad police are conducting a parallel criminal investigation. They have seized the accused officer's mobile phone and other evidence as part of the probe.
What happens next: The accused trainee will be produced before a local court once he is discharged from hospital. The academy's internal committee is expected to submit its preliminary report within a week.
