Apple is rolling out a device leasing program in India, partnering with Swedish fintech firm Klarna. The programme, called 'Upgrade', will allow customers to rent iPhones, iPads and Macs through monthly payment plans rather than buying them outright.
The move comes after Apple raised prices on its latest iPhone models, making affordability a key concern for the Indian market. The lease-to-own model is designed to lower the upfront cost barrier for consumers who want Apple hardware but find the sticker price steep.
Under the plan, customers will make monthly payments for up to 36 months. At the end of the lease term, they have the option to upgrade to a newer device or keep the current one by completing the ownership transfer.
The program covers iPhones, iPads and Macs. Klarna will handle the financing and credit checks, while Apple will manage device delivery and trade-ins. The exact interest rates and eligibility criteria are yet to be disclosed.
India is one of Apple's fastest-growing markets, but high prices have limited its reach. The lease model could bring in customers who previously could not afford a flagship iPhone or MacBook.
Industry analysts say this approach mirrors what Apple already offers in the US and Europe through its own Upgrade Program. By partnering with Klarna, Apple avoids setting up its own credit infrastructure while tapping Klarna's existing user base in India.
Rivals like Samsung and OnePlus already offer EMI and buy-now-pay-later options through Indian fintech partners. Apple's move directly challenges these players by offering a branded leasing option with a guaranteed upgrade path.
The program is expected to launch next week. Apple has not confirmed whether the lease will include AppleCare+ or other services. Klarna's role will be critical in managing defaults and credit risk.
Customers can expect more details on the Apple India website and retail stores once the programme goes live. The typical monthly payment for an iPhone 16 Pro could be in the range of a few thousand rupees, though official pricing is awaited.
All eyes are on the exact terms and interest rates Apple and Klarna announce. If uptake is strong, this leasing model could become a template for other premium electronics in India.
