GCC surge in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has added 197 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) since the start of 2024, according to data released by the state government. The new centres bring the total number of GCCs in the city to over 1,500. These centres handle a range of functions, from IT services and data analytics to financial operations and research for multinational corporations.

The Telangana government attributes the growth to the city's infrastructure, stable power supply, and a steady pipeline of engineering graduates. The state's IT Minister said the numbers show Hyderabad is no longer just an alternative to Bengaluru, but a preferred destination in its own right.

Why companies are choosing Hyderabad

Industry analysts point to lower operational costs and a well-developed suburban office corridor along the Outer Ring Road. Several Fortune 500 firms have set up their largest India-based GCCs in Hyderabad over the past 18 months.

The city's airport connectivity and the presence of the Hyderabad Pharma City, a dedicated industrial zone, also act as draws. Real estate consultants report that office space absorption by GCCs in Hyderabad rose by 22% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year.

Competition with other tech hubs

Bengaluru still houses the largest number of GCCs in India, with estimates crossing 1,800. Pune, Chennai, and the National Capital Region are also strong contenders. But Hyderabad's rate of growth — 197 centres in roughly two and a half years — is among the fastest in the country.

The city has managed to attract centres from sectors beyond traditional IT, including banking, insurance, and aerospace. Major US and European banks have expanded their back-office operations in Hyderabad, drawn by the availability of skilled finance and compliance professionals.

The state government has not disclosed the total employment generated by these 197 new centres, but officials say they expect the figure to be in the tens of thousands.

What this means for Hyderabad's economy

GCCs typically employ highly skilled workers and pay above the local average. Their rapid expansion has pushed up demand for premium housing in areas like HITEC City, Gachibowli, and Madhapur. It has also put pressure on the city's road network and water infrastructure.

The government has announced plans to extend the Hyderabad Metro to the airport and to develop new satellite townships along the Regional Ring Road to manage the urban sprawl.

With more than 1,500 GCCs now operating in the city, Hyderabad is firmly in the top three destinations in India for multinational capability centres. Whether it can sustain this pace will depend on how quickly the state can upgrade its infrastructure to match the needs of these global operations.
