Hyderabad has been ranked as India's safest metro city for driving in the India Road Safety Report 2026. The report, released earlier this week, evaluated major metropolitan areas across the country on parameters such as accident rates, road infrastructure quality, and enforcement of traffic regulations.

The Telangana capital outperformed other metros including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. Officials from the Hyderabad Traffic Police credited the ranking to sustained efforts in road safety awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

Key Metrics Behind the Ranking

The India Road Safety Report 2026 assessed cities using data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as well as state transport departments. Hyderabad recorded a lower number of fatal accidents per lakh vehicles compared to its peers.

Road infrastructure improvements, including better signage, pedestrian crossings, and well-maintained roads, were also cited as contributing factors. The report noted that Hyderabad has implemented several traffic calming measures in high-risk zones.

Traffic Enforcement and Public Awareness

The Hyderabad Traffic Police have ramped up enforcement against speeding, drunk driving, and helmetless riding. Regular checkpoints and the use of automated traffic management systems have helped reduce violations.

Public awareness campaigns focused on road safety have been conducted in schools, colleges, and corporate offices. The police department has also partnered with NGOs to educate drivers and pedestrians about safe practices.

Reactions from Officials and Experts

Senior officials from the Telangana Transport Department welcomed the ranking. They said it reflects the state government's commitment to improving road safety through policy and implementation.

Road safety experts, however, caution that the ranking should not lead to complacency. They point out that while Hyderabad leads among metros, the city still faces challenges such as congestion in old city areas and underdeveloped road networks in some outskirts.

Other metro cities in the report saw mixed results. Bengaluru and Mumbai were noted for their efforts in reducing accident hotspots but struggled with enforcement due to high traffic volumes. Delhi continued to face challenges with fatal accidents, particularly on highways and arterial roads.

The report highlighted that Hyderabad's relatively lower population density compared to some other metros may have helped in maintaining safer driving conditions. But officials argue that proactive measures, not demographics, were the main drivers of the improved ranking.

Moving forward, the Hyderabad Traffic Police plan to introduce more AI-based traffic management systems and expand the network of speed cameras. The goal is to sustain the downward trend in road accidents and fatalities.
