IndusInd Bank has kicked off the fiscal year with a robust performance, posting a 46% surge in net profit for the first quarter ended June 2026. The private sector lender's earnings comfortably beat market estimates, driven by a sharp drop in provisions and a one-time tax benefit.
The bank's profit after tax (PAT) for Q1FY27 rose nearly 47% compared to the same period last year, according to reports. This marks a strong start for the Mumbai-based lender, which has been navigating a sector-wide cleanup of bad loans.
A key highlight of the quarter was the sharp decline in provisions. The bank set aside significantly less money to cover potential loan losses, reflecting an improvement in asset quality. Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) also came down, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of total advances.
The improvement in asset quality suggests that the worst of the bad loan cycle may be behind the bank. Analysts had been closely watching the bank's stress book, and the latest numbers provide some relief.
Besides lower provisions, the bank's bottom line got a lift from a tax refund. This one-time benefit, along with a decline in the cost of deposits, helped the net profit jump even higher. Some reports indicate that the profit rose by as much as 72% when factoring in the tax write-back.
The bank's net interest income (NII) also saw a healthy uptick, supported by steady loan growth. However, the margin compression that has been a concern for the sector appears to have moderated for IndusInd Bank.
With the asset quality cleanup largely behind it, the bank is now expected to pivot towards growth. The management has indicated that the stress book is now manageable, and the focus will be on expanding the loan book, particularly in the retail and microfinance segments.
The market reaction has been positive, with the stock gaining in early trade following the earnings announcement. Investors are now looking for sustained improvement in return ratios and a steady reduction in the cost of funds.
Moving forward, the bank's ability to maintain its deposit franchise and manage margins in a competitive rate environment will be crucial. The street will also watch for any signs of stress in the unsecured lending portfolio.
