Connaught Place Shops, Offices Ordered to Close by 6:30 PM Amid Protests

New Delhi: Connaught Place, the commercial heart of the capital, is set for an early shutdown on Thursday evening. Delhi Police has ordered all shops, offices and eateries in the area to down their shutters by 6:30 PM.

The directive comes as student protests near Sansad Marg grew tense. Officials described the move as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents.

Precautionary Closure Ordered

The New Delhi Traders' Association confirmed the development. A representative said the order was communicated to them by the local police station in the afternoon.

“We have been asked to close by 6:30 PM. It is a precautionary step given the situation near Sansad Marg,” a trader said. The association urged all members to comply with the directive.

Connaught Place typically sees heavy footfall until late evening, with its restaurants and bars operating well past midnight. The early closure is expected to disrupt business for several hours.

Tensions Rise Near Sansad Marg

The protests, led by students under the banner of the CJP (Coordination of Joint Protest), escalated on Thursday. Reports from Sansad Marg indicated that bottles were thrown towards police personnel deployed at the site.

Police have not confirmed any injuries or arrests in connection with the incident. However, the situation prompted authorities to tighten security in the area.

The stretch between Connaught Place and Parliament House has been a focal point of the agitation. Protesters have been demanding action on their pending demands, though officials have not yet disclosed the specifics of the latest escalation.

Amid the street protests, the central government has sent a fourth invitation to the CJP for dialogue. The invite proposes a meeting, but the CJP has refused to hold talks at BJP president J.P. Nadda's office or residence.

Sources indicated that the government is keen to resolve the standoff through discussions. However, the refusal over the venue has created a fresh hurdle. The CJP has insisted on a neutral location for the talks.

Both sides remain firm on their positions, with no breakthrough expected immediately. The student body has called for continued protests until their demands are met.
