
Astronomers are sounding an urgent alarm. A proposed mega-constellation of over one million satellites and 50,000 orbiting mirrors could soon create an artificial 'Saturn's ring' around Earth. The result, they warn, would permanently brighten the night sky, upending millennia of stargazing and modern astrophysics.
The concept, still in early design stages, involves deploying a dense belt of reflective objects in low Earth orbit. These would be visible to the naked eye and, collectively, could outshine many natural stars and planets.
Researchers describe the potential impact as 'catastrophic' for observational astronomy. Ground-based telescopes, already struggling with light pollution from existing satellite swarms like Starlink, would face an unprecedented challenge. The artificial ring could overwhelm sensitive instruments designed to capture faint light from distant galaxies and exoplanets.
“This is not just about losing a pretty view,” one scientist noted. “It would cripple our ability to do fundamental science. Entire research programs could become obsolete overnight.” The ring's brightness would also interfere with radio astronomy, as satellites emit signals across multiple frequencies.
