India’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has received a significant boost before the opening ceremony even begins. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain has assured the country its first medal of the event, advancing to the semifinals in her weight category.
By reaching the last four, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist guarantees at least a silver or bronze for India. The development comes as a morale booster for the Indian contingent, which is competing in a downsized edition of the Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Lovlina, who won bronze in the 69kg category at the Tokyo Games, has been in formidable form. She dominated her quarterfinal bout, showcasing sharp footwork and precise counter-punches against her opponent.
Her performance has put India on the medal tally even before the official start of the multi-sport event. The Boxing Federation of India confirmed her semifinal berth, triggering celebrations among officials and fans back home.
“She has trained exceptionally hard for this. The result is a testament to her dedication,” a federation source said, requesting anonymity.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are being held under unusual circumstances. Originally scheduled to be hosted by Victoria, Australia, the event was moved to Glasgow after Victoria pulled out due to financial constraints.
The Glasgow edition is a slimmed-down affair, with fewer sports and athletes compared to previous editions. India has sent a smaller contingent, with focus on core disciplines like boxing, wrestling, shooting, and athletics.
Rajpal, the chef de mission of the Indian team, has struck a realistic tone about the country’s overall medal prospects. “We are not setting unrealistic targets. The competition is tough, and the field is strong. Every medal will be hard-earned,” he said ahead of the Games.
India’s medal hopes also rest on stars like wrestler Bajrang Punia and shuttler P.V. Sindhu, who are expected to compete in their respective events.
Lovlina’s assured medal takes the pressure off the rest of the contingent. In previous editions, India has often had to wait for the first medal until the second or third day of competition.
Having a guaranteed podium finish from the start allows other athletes to focus on their events without the burden of getting India on the board. It also sets a positive tone for the younger athletes in the squad, many of whom are making their Commonwealth Games debut.
The Indian Olympic Association has lauded Lovlina’s achievement, stating it reflects the growing depth of Indian boxing.
The Commonwealth Games 2026 schedule includes events across multiple venues in Glasgow. India’s full schedule features boxing, wrestling, shooting, athletics, weightlifting, and badminton.
Lovlina will now prepare for her semifinal clash, where a win would upgrade her medal to at least silver. The final is scheduled for later in the week.
For now, India can celebrate its first medal of the Games—a feat secured by a pugilist who continues to make the nation proud on the global stage.
