
Northrop Grumman has launched a private mission to extend the operational life of the Optus D3 communications satellite. The satellite, which serves customers across Australia and New Zealand, has been running low on fuel. Without intervention, it would soon drift out of its designated orbit and become space debris.
The mission uses the company's Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV), a spacecraft designed to perform on-orbit servicing. It launched aboard a SpaceX rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and is now en route to rendezvous with Optus D3.
The MRV is equipped with a pair of 10-foot robotic arms. These arms allow the vehicle to grasp, refuel and reposition satellites that were never designed to be serviced in space. This marks a shift from the traditional approach, where satellites are simply abandoned once their propellant runs out.
Northrop Grumman says the mission is the first of its kind involving a commercial communications satellite. The company has been developing on-orbit servicing technology for years, and this mission represents a major step toward making satellite refueling routine.
Optus D3 was launched in 2009 and operates in geostationary orbit. It provides broadcast and broadband services across Australia, New Zealand and parts of Southeast Asia. The satellite is owned by Optus, a subsidiary of Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel).
By refueling the satellite, Northrop Grumman aims to extend its life by several more years. This avoids the need to launch a costly replacement and reduces the amount of space debris in orbit. Officials have not disclosed the exact cost of the mission, but industry analysts estimate it runs into the tens of millions of dollars.
The mission is part of a broader trend in the space industry. Companies like Northrop Grumman and Astroscale are developing technologies to repair, refuel and eventually de-orbit old satellites. The global market for on-orbit servicing is expected to grow as more satellites reach the end of their designed life.
Space agencies and private operators are increasingly concerned about orbital congestion. Over 8,000 satellites currently orbit Earth, and many are defunct. Servicing missions can help reduce the risk of collisions and keep valuable assets operational for longer.
The MRV is expected to reach Optus D3 within the next few weeks. Once docked, it will transfer fuel and perform any necessary repairs before moving on to other satellites. Northrop Grumman has said it plans to offer similar services to other satellite operators in the future.
