Chennai: A clash between two groups of college students at Guindy Railway Station on Wednesday morning led to the arrest of three persons. The incident occurred around 11 am on platform number 3, causing brief panic among morning commuters.
Police said the fight broke out over a minor argument between students from two different colleges. Witnesses reported that the argument quickly turned physical, with both groups exchanging blows before railway police intervened.
Police Response and Arrests
Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel patrolling the station reached the spot within minutes. They managed to separate the groups and detained three students for questioning.
“The three have been taken into custody. We are verifying the sequence of events and will take action based on the investigation,” a senior GRP officer said. The officer did not disclose the names of the accused as the inquiry was still underway.
Injuries and Medical Aid
One student sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. He was rushed to the Government Hospital in nearby Chromepet. Hospital sources said the student is stable and undergoing treatment. Doctors have not reported any serious injuries.
Other students from both groups were let off after being given a warning. Police have also informed the respective college authorities about the incident.
Security at the Station
Guindy Railway Station, a busy hub connecting southern suburbs to Chennai city, sees heavy footfall during peak hours. Wednesday’s incident, though isolated, has raised questions about security on station premises.
Railway police said they have increased patrolling in the area. “We will coordinate with the colleges to ensure such incidents do not recur. Students are advised to avoid confrontations and report any issues to the station master or police,” the officer added.
Authorities have not yet confirmed if any weapons were used during the clash. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected later in the day.
What happens next depends on the outcome of the police inquiry. The arrested students could face charges of affray and causing public nuisance, with the possibility of suspension from their respective colleges pending a disciplinary review.
