Gemini Live arrives on older hardware

Google is finally bringing its Gemini Live assistant to older Home devices. The update, which started rolling out on July 23, 2026, targets speakers and smart displays that have been gathering dust in living rooms across India.

Users with original Google Home, Home Mini, Nest Audio, and Nest Hub devices will now see the Gemini Live interface appear. This is the same conversational AI that launched on Pixel phones earlier this year.

What changes with the update

The biggest change is in how you talk to the device. Instead of needing to say "Hey Google" before every command, you can now have a back-and-forth conversation. The assistant remembers context for up to 15 minutes.

This means you can ask about the weather, then immediately say "What about tomorrow?" and it will understand. Or you can say "Set a timer for 10 minutes" and then "Make it 15" without repeating the full command.

For Nest Cam users, there is a separate July 2026 update rolling out. It improves motion detection and adds Gemini-powered alerts that describe what the camera sees in natural language.

A new speaker after six years

Alongside the software update, Google launched its first new smart speaker in six years. Priced at ¥16,800 in Japan (roughly ₹1.8 lakh in Indian currency), the device features Gemini AI built-in from the factory.

The new speaker is designed for what Google calls "natural conversation" — the kind where you do not have to think about your wording. It can handle interruptions, follow-up questions, and even vague requests like "Play something relaxing."

Analysts note that the long gap between hardware launches suggests Google is betting big on software upgrades to keep older devices relevant.

Rollout details for Indian users

Google has not specified a timeline for the Indian market. Users in the US and select Asian markets are seeing the update first. Devices need to be connected to Wi-Fi and running the latest Google Home app version.

To check if your device has received the update, open the Google Home app and look for the Gemini Live toggle under device settings. If it is not there yet, it should arrive in the coming weeks.

The 15-minute context memory works with most common queries — weather, timers, music, smart home controls. Complex tasks like booking a restaurant or sending an email still require a phone or laptop.
