Vijay Pays Tribute to MGR in 'Jana Nayagan' as Farewell Film Opens Strong

Tamil cinema superstar 'Thalapathy' Vijay has released his final film before entering full-time politics. Titled Jana Nayagan, the movie hit theatres on Thursday and opened to massive crowds across Tamil Nadu.

The film earned Rs 41 crore net in India on day one, according to early estimates from the trade analyst industry. Distributors said advance bookings had been strong for weeks.

Tribute to MGR

Vijay has woven a tribute to former chief minister and matinee idol M G Ramachandran into the film. Sources close to the production confirmed the homage was written into key scenes.

MGR remains a towering figure in Tamil Nadu politics and cinema. Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party, has often drawn comparisons to the late leader. The tribute is being read as a deliberate political signal.

Political figures turn up

Several ministers and MLAs from various parties attended early morning shows in Chennai and other districts. Reports described some of them turning emotional during the screening.

One ruling party MLA told reporters outside a theatre: "This film belongs to the people. It captures the aspirations of Tamil Nadu." Another opposition legislator said the film's message of social justice was timely.

Producer Venkat K Narayana released a statement saying Jana Nayagan is a film for the masses and thanked fans for their patience during the long wait.

Trisha attends screening

Actress Trisha Krishnan, who stars opposite Vijay, was spotted at a special screening in Chennai. She wore a blue denim jacket over a white T-shirt and posed briefly for cameras.

Trisha did not speak to the press but waved at fans who had gathered outside the theatre. Social media footage showed her smiling and shaking hands with the crew.

Box office start

The day one collection of Rs 41 crore net in India places Jana Nayagan among the top openers of the year. Trade analysts said the number could climb as weekend footfall increases.

Overseas markets also reported strong advance sales, particularly in the United States, Malaysia and Singapore. The film is expected to cross Rs 100 crore worldwide within the first weekend.

Vijay announced last year that Jana Nayagan would be his final film as an actor. He has since focused on building his political party, which is expected to contest the next state assembly elections.

The film's release has been accompanied by tight security at theatres. Police deployed extra personnel in major cities to manage the crowds.
