A prominent Bollywood filmmaker has sparked a debate by stating that most mainstream Hindi films now openly praise the government. The remark, made in a recent interview with Mid-Day, points to a notable shift in the industry's storytelling approach over the past few years.

The director, whose name has not been disclosed in the report, did not single out any specific movie. But the observation has resonated across film circles, with many agreeing that the narrative landscape has changed.

A clear pattern in recent releases

Several big-budget Bollywood films released in the last two years feature protagonists who are government officials or soldiers. These characters are often shown as incorruptible patriots working for the nation's progress.

Movies like the recently released Swabhiman and Rakshak have been cited as examples. In both, the central conflict is resolved through the intervention of a government agency or a political leader portrayed in a positive light.

Industry insiders weigh in

Producers and writers who spoke to TIVRA News on condition of anonymity said the trend is partly driven by commercial considerations. "A film that supports the ruling establishment gets smoother clearances and better promotions on government-controlled platforms," one producer said.

Another writer pointed to social media pressure. "If a film doesn't show the government in a good light, it risks getting trolled. Many producers don't want that headache."

Critics and supporters react

Film critics argue that the trend reduces cinema to propaganda. "Art should ask questions, not just applaud the status quo," said a senior film journalist. "When every film becomes a government endorsement, the audience loses the chance to see complex stories."

Supporters of the trend, however, see it as a natural expression of patriotism. "Why should films always be critical?" asked a trade analyst. "If the government is doing good work, showing that in a film is not sycophancy. It's just honest storytelling."

What this means for Bollywood's future

Historically, Bollywood has produced films that challenged authority, especially during the Emergency era of the 1970s and the anti-corruption movements of the 2010s. The current trend marks a departure from that legacy.

Some filmmakers privately express concern that the shift could narrow the range of stories Bollywood is willing to tell. "If every film has to toe a certain line, we will lose the diversity that made Indian cinema special," one director said.

For now, the box office seems to reward the trend. But audiences are also showing interest in smaller, independent films that take a different approach. Whether the pendulum will swing back remains to be seen.
