Two teenagers were killed and a third injured in a road accident in Hyderabad late on Saturday night. The incident occurred near the Rajendranagar area, a stretch that sees heavy traffic through the day.
Police said the three were riding a motorcycle when an unidentified vehicle hit them and sped away. The impact threw them off the bike. Two of them died at the spot.
The injured teen was rushed to a nearby government hospital. His condition is stated to be stable, according to hospital sources.
Victims identified
The deceased have been identified as residents of the Rajendranagar locality. They were in their late teens. Police have informed their families.
The third occupant of the motorcycle is also a teenager. Doctors attending to him said he sustained multiple bruises and a minor fracture. He is out of danger.
Police investigation under way
Rajendranagar police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. They are scanning CCTV footage from nearby junctions to identify the vehicle involved.
“We have not yet traced the vehicle. A search is on. The driver appears to have fled the scene immediately after the collision,” a police officer said, requesting not to be named.
No arrests have been made so far. Officials said they are also probing whether the teens were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
Frequent accidents on this stretch
Local residents said accidents are common on this road, especially after dark. They blame poor street lighting and speeding vehicles for the crashes.
“This is not the first time we have seen a fatal accident here. The authorities need to install speed breakers and better lights,” said a shopkeeper who lives nearby.
Police have not yet commented on the demand for road-safety measures. They said the focus now is on nailing the hit-and-run driver.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. The injured teen is expected to be discharged in a day or two.
