The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to roll out its Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in August, a move officials say will modernise the city's traffic management and public transport network. The system integrates real-time tracking, automated signal control, and a single mobile application for commuters.
The ITS will equip over 2,000 Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses with GPS devices. Commuters will be able to see bus locations and estimated arrival times through the new app.
Digital boards at major bus stops will also display real-time information. This is expected to reduce waiting times and make bus travel more predictable.
The system will link traffic signals to a central control room. Sensors and cameras at key junctions will adjust signal timings based on vehicle density.
Corporation officials say this dynamic control can cut idling time at red lights by up to 30%. The move targets chronic bottlenecks on arterial roads such as Anna Salai and Poonamallee High Road.
A single mobile application will combine bus tracking, signal timings, and route planning. The app will also include information on parking availability at select locations.
Commuters can pay for bus tickets and parking through the app. The corporation aims to reduce the need for multiple apps or cash transactions.
The system will first cover a 50-kilometre corridor from Tambaram to Broadway. If successful, the corporation plans to expand ITS to the entire city within 12 months.
Officials have not confirmed the exact launch date in August. The project is funded under the Smart Cities Mission, with an initial outlay of โน120 crore.
The corporation expects the system to handle data from over 3,000 vehicles and 500 junctions once fully operational. Engineers are currently testing the integration of GPS feeds and signal controllers.
The success of the ITS depends on seamless data integration and public adoption of the app. The corporation will release a detailed timeline for the rollout in the first week of August.
