
Indian astronomers have captured the rare moment a blue straggler star is being born. Using data from India's ASTROSAT space observatory and ground-based telescopes, the team observed a star in a globular cluster sucking mass from its companion. The process has rejuvenated the star, making it hotter and bluer than other stars of its age.
Blue stragglers have puzzled scientists for decades. They appear far younger and brighter than the rest of the stars in their ancient clusters, which are often billions of years old. Until now, no one had seen one forming in real time.
The discovery was made in the globular cluster M67, located about 2,700 light-years from Earth. The team identified a binary star system where one star is pulling material from its partner. As the mass transfers, the receiving star heats up and burns brighter, mimicking the appearance of a young, massive star.
This process is often called stellar cannibalism or vampirism. The study confirms that mass transfer in binary systems is the primary mechanism behind blue straggler formation. The finding solves a mystery that astronomers have debated for over 50 years.
The team used the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard ASTROSAT, India's first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory. UVIT's sharp ultraviolet vision was key to spotting the hot, young-looking star among its cooler, redder neighbors. Ground-based follow-ups from the Himalayan Chandra Telescope and the Devasthal Optical Telescope confirmed the binary nature of the system.
The research has been published in a peer-reviewed journal. The astronomers noted that the system is still actively transferring mass, meaning the blue straggler is still evolving.
Globular clusters are like fossils of the early universe. Finding a blue straggler in the act of formation helps astronomers understand how stars interact and evolve in dense environments.
