Kriti Sanon: From Mimi to Blue Butterfly Films, a Decade of Growth

Kriti Sanon walked into Bollywood a decade ago with a song-and-dance debut in Heropanti. She didn't just survive the industry's churn — she outgrew it. Today, she runs her own production company, Blue Butterfly Films, and has a National Film Award on her shelf.

The shift from being a star to a producer didn't happen overnight. It was built role by role, from the comic timing in Bareilly Ki Barfi to the emotional heft of Mimi.

From Debut to National Award Winner

Sanon's early years were about proving she could hold her own opposite established male leads. Heropanti (2014) was a standard launch pad, but she quickly moved to better scripts. Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) showed she could do quirky. Luka Chuppi (2019) proved she could carry a comedy on her shoulders.

Then came Mimi (2021). The film, about a woman who becomes a surrogate mother, was a gamble. It paid off. Sanon won the National Film Award for Best Actress. The role wasn't just a career high — it gave her the confidence to think beyond acting.

Blue Butterfly Films: A Producer's Vision

In 2023, Sanon announced Blue Butterfly Films. The name is personal — blue is her favourite colour, and butterflies symbolise transformation. The company isn't just a vanity project. She wants to produce stories that are young, bold, and rooted in Indian reality.

Her first production, Do Patti, is a crime thriller co-starring Kajol. Set for a 2024 release, the film marks her debut as a producer. She has not limited herself to acting in these projects. She is looking to back new directors and writers, giving them a platform.

Balancing Scale with Substance

Not every Sanon film is a festival favourite. She has done her share of big-budget spectacles. Adipurush (2023), a retelling of the Ramayana, was a box office disaster. Critics panned its VFX and dialogue. But Sanon didn't let the failure derail her. She moved on, signing Crew alongside Kareena Kapoor and Tabu.

That film, a heist comedy about three air hostesses, released this year to solid reviews. It showed Sanon can hold her own in an ensemble of more experienced actors. Her filmography now mixes the commercial with the credible — a deliberate strategy.

What's Next for the Actor-Producer

Sanon is currently shooting Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, a sci-fi romance with Shahid Kapoor. She is also developing two more projects under Blue Butterfly Films. The titles are yet to be announced, but sources say one is a female-led action thriller.

The industry is watching. Most actors start producing after their commercial appeal wanes. Sanon is doing it at her peak. If her track record is any guide, she will pick her battles carefully. The next few years will tell whether Blue Butterfly Films becomes a meaningful banner or just another celebrity side hustle.
