Oppo has begun rolling out its ColorOS 16 July update, bringing a handful of user-facing features and performance tweaks to compatible smartphones. The update, confirmed by the company, focuses on personalisation and camera improvements.

Fingerprint Animations Get a Style Makeover

One of the headline additions is the ability to customise fingerprint unlock animations. Users can now choose from a small set of visual effects that play when they unlock their phone using the in-display fingerprint sensor. The feature is part of Oppo's broader push to let users "Craft Your Style," as the company describes it in its official changelog.

The customisation options are accessible through the settings menu under the fingerprint section. Oppo has not specified how many animation styles are available, but early reports suggest at least half a dozen variants. The update does not affect the speed or accuracy of the fingerprint scanner.

Two New Camera Filters and Smarter Face Unlock

Photography enthusiasts will find two new camera filters in the update. Oppo has not revealed their names or specific effects, but they are expected to add distinct colour grading options for portrait and landscape shots. The filters are integrated directly into the native camera app's filter carousel.

Face Unlock has also received an upgrade. The facial recognition system now uses improved algorithms to work better in low-light conditions and at wider angles. Oppo claims the smarter Face Unlock can recognise users even when they are wearing accessories like glasses or a mask, though officials have not confirmed the exact degree of improvement over the previous version.

Contact Poster Preview and Performance Tuning

The July update introduces a Contact Poster preview feature. It allows users to see how their contact poster — a full-screen visual that appears when calling someone — will look before applying it. This mirrors a similar feature found in rival operating systems and gives users more control over their calling screen aesthetics.

Beyond new features, the update includes general performance optimisations. Oppo says the system now runs smoother, with faster app launch times and reduced stutter in animations. The company has not provided specific benchmarks, but early user reports indicate a noticeable improvement in day-to-day responsiveness. The update is rolling out over-the-air in phases, so not all users will see it immediately.

Oppo has not published a full list of eligible devices, but the update is expected to reach recent models in the Find X, Reno, and F series. Users can check for the update manually by going to Settings > Software Update. The company typically completes staged rollouts within two to three weeks.

The ColorOS 16 July update marks another incremental step in Oppo's software strategy — adding polish without overhauling the core experience. It remains to be seen whether the company will follow up with a larger feature drop later this year, possibly tied to the launch of Android 15.
