Indian equity benchmarks opened sharply higher on Monday, riding a wave of optimism from global markets. The BSE Sensex jumped more than 650 points in early trade, while the NSE Nifty 50 surged past the 23,950 level.
All sectoral indices were in the green, with banking, auto, and metal stocks leading the gains. The India VIX, a measure of market volatility, fell by 5%, signaling a calmer outlook among traders.
The rally was largely fueled by a steep decline in global crude oil prices. Reports of potential de-escalation in the conflict between the US and Iran prompted a sell-off in oil markets, bringing relief to import-dependent nations like India.
Lower crude prices directly benefit Indian oil marketing companies and reduce the country's import bill. They also ease inflationary pressures, which the Reserve Bank of India has been closely monitoring. This has renewed hopes that interest rates may stay stable or even see a cut in upcoming policy reviews.
The upswing was not limited to heavyweights. Mid-cap and small-cap indices also traded higher, reflecting broad-based buying interest. Market breadth remained strong, with more than two stocks advancing for every one declining on the BSE.
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the cash market, adding to the positive sentiment. Analysts noted that the combination of falling crude and a resilient domestic economy is providing a strong tailwind for equities.
Banking stocks, which had been under pressure due to rising provisioning costs, rebounded sharply. The Nifty Bank index rose over 2%, with major private and public sector banks posting gains. Auto stocks also surged on expectations of lower input costs.
Metal and mining stocks continued their upward trajectory, aided by strong demand and stable global prices. The IT sector, however, lagged slightly as a stronger rupee against the dollar could impact export earnings.
Investors will now focus on the upcoming monthly auto sales data and the progress of the monsoon season, which influences rural demand. Global cues, particularly any fresh developments in the US-Iran situation, will remain a key trigger.
The market's ability to sustain above the 24,000 mark on the Nifty will be closely watched in the coming sessions. Traders are advised to stay nimble, as geopolitical events can quickly shift sentiment.
