Shehnaaz Gill, who shot to fame after her stint in Bigg Boss 13, has been careful about her Bollywood moves. In an exclusive chat with News18, the actor explained why she has not jumped into Hindi films despite numerous offers.
Shehnaaz said she is wary of being reduced to a decorative element on screen. “I don't want to be used as a prop in a film. That is not why I entered this industry,” she stated.
The actor acknowledged that many projects come her way, but most do not offer substantial roles. “People want to cast me for my fan following. But I want to do something that challenges me. I want to be an actor, not just a face,” she added.
When asked who inspires her to maintain that standard, Shehnaaz named Radhika Apte. “I look at Radhika Apte and I feel encouraged. She does work that is meaningful. She is not afraid to say no,” Shehnaaz said.
The actor admires how Apte balances mainstream and offbeat cinema. “She picks roles that stay with you. That is the kind of career I want to build. I want to be remembered for my work, not just my presence,” she explained.
For now, Shehnaaz is concentrating on Punjabi cinema. She has a few projects in the pipeline in her home industry, where she feels she gets more creative freedom.
“Punjabi films give me space to perform. I don't have to fight for good scenes. The scripts are written for me, not around me,” she said.
Shehnaaz also hinted at a possible web series in the future but remained tight-lipped about details. “I am reading a lot of scripts. I want to be sure before I commit,” she said.
Shehnaaz is not ruling out Hindi films entirely. She is waiting for a script that does justice to her potential. “If a role requires me to act, I will do it. If it just requires me to stand and look pretty, I will pass,” she said.
Industry watchers will be keen to see if any Hindi filmmaker steps up with a meaty role for her. Until then, Shehnaaz seems content to take her time.
