Congress Leader Calls for Home Minister's Ouster

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over what he described as police brutality during student protests in Delhi. Gandhi alleged that the police action was disproportionate and violated fundamental rights.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Gandhi said the Home Minister had lost the moral authority to continue in office. He accused the central government of using police forces to suppress dissent.

Demand for Supreme Court-Monitored Probe

Gandhi also called for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the incidents. He argued that an independent inquiry was necessary to ensure accountability.

“The people of India need to know the truth. A probe by the highest court is the only way to restore faith in the system,” Gandhi stated. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack Shah from the cabinet.

Guarantees to Students

In a separate interaction with student groups, Gandhi offered three guarantees. He promised legal aid for all students involved in the protests, a commitment to repeal the sedition law, and a review of police conduct during demonstrations.

“We will ensure that no student is unfairly targeted. The right to protest is a constitutional right,” Gandhi said. His remarks were met with cheers from student supporters gathered at the site.

BJP's Counterattack

The Bharatiya Janata Party swiftly hit back. Party spokesperson Sambit Patra accused Gandhi of spreading misinformation about the police action. Patra demanded an unconditional apology from the Congress leader.

“Rahul Gandhi is playing politics with the law and order situation. His statements are baseless and dangerous,” Patra said during a press conference. He claimed that the police had acted within legal limits to manage the protests.

Political Fallout

The confrontation has escalated tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. Several opposition parties have expressed solidarity with Gandhi's demand for a probe. Student groups across the country have announced plans for further demonstrations.

Government officials have not yet responded formally to Gandhi's resignation demand. The Home Ministry has not issued a statement on the allegations of police brutality.

As the political slugfest intensifies, all eyes are on whether the government will agree to an independent investigation. The coming days could see more protests and parliamentary debate over the issue.
