A routine police operation in Bengaluru took a dramatic turn on Tuesday when a wanted man allegedly attempted suicide as officers closed in on him. The incident occurred in the city's outskirts, where a team from the local police station had gone to apprehend the suspect.

The man, wanted in multiple cases including theft and assault, reportedly consumed a poisonous substance when he saw the police approaching. Officers immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital.

Hospitalised, condition stable

Hospital sources confirmed that the man is currently stable and under observation. Medical staff said he was brought in with symptoms of poisoning and has responded well to treatment.

Police officials have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the substance consumed or the number of cases against the suspect. Investigations are ongoing.

Bengaluru Police have registered a case of attempted suicide and are investigating the circumstances leading to the incident. A senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the team had followed standard procedures during the operation.

“The suspect was wanted in several cases. Our team acted on a tip-off and reached the location. Before they could detain him, he consumed something suspicious,” the officer said.

Legal implications

Attempting suicide is a criminal offence under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, though courts have often taken a lenient view. Legal experts say the accused could face additional charges if found guilty.

The police are also verifying if the man has any prior history of such behaviour. His family has been informed, and officials are awaiting his statement once he is medically fit.

The man is expected to be produced before a magistrate after his discharge. The police will seek custody for further questioning in connection with the original cases against him.
