Ajinkya Rahane, a name that rarely dominated headlines but always held the Indian batting line-up together, has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 38-year-old from Mumbai walked away with 5,077 Test runs, 11 centuries, and a captaincy legacy that includes one of India's greatest overseas victories — the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in Australia.

Never in the spotlight, always on call

Rahane's career was a study in understatement. While contemporaries like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma drew attention for their strokeplay, Rahane was the man holding the other end. He was never the most flamboyant batsman in the dressing room, but he was often the most reliable.

His technique against the moving ball, especially in seaming conditions abroad, made him a vital cog in India's Test side. From the Lord's hundred in 2014 to the match-winning 112 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2020, Rahane's best knocks came when the team needed them most.
